Charles Edward Stem, 79, of Westminster, died Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at Carroll Hospital Center. Born June 20, 1935, in Pleasant Valley, he was the son of the late Margaret Stem Hyde and Truman Levine Stem. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Leppo Stem. Before retiring, he worked as a supervisor for C & P Telephone Company. He also worked several years at Bullock's Airport Inn. He was a member and deacon at Meadow Branch Church of the Brethren and also helped with the pancake breakfast. He was an honorary member of the Pleasant Valley Vol. Fire Co. and member of the Moose Lodge No. 1381. He held dances to raise money for Pleasant Valley Vol. Fire Co. which he became an honorary member. He started and was a member of the band, Cross Country. He loved playing with his dog "Baby." Besides his wife, he is survived by daughter and son-in-law Deborah Stem Smith and Matt of Hampstead, son and daughter-in-law Richard L. and Debbie Stem of Hampstead; brothers and sisters-in-law Truman B. Stem of Gamber, George L. and Betty Stem of Littlestown, Pa., Harold L. Stem of Westminster and David W. and Sue Stem of Thomasville, Pa.; grandchildren Kacey Hudgins and husband Mike of Hanover, Kyle Smith and wife Brittni of Manchester and Darcie Cipollini and husband Joe of Wrightsville, Pa; great-grandchildren Kailey, Ava and Colton. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Meadow Branch Church of the Brethren, 818 Old Taneytown Rd., Westminster, MD 21158, with Pastor Tom Richard, officiating. Interment will follow at Meadow Branch Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to Meadow Branch Church of the Brethren, 818 Old Taneytown Rd., Westminster, MD 21158.
