Clarence Gibson, age 85 of Westminster passed away peacefully with family by his side on the Lord's Day, Sunday, January 29, 2017. Born in Tennessee, he was the son of the late Broton and Elizabeth Gibson. He is survived by his wife Betty Jane of 65 years strong and who he always said was the love of his life. Clarence worked at Standard Supplies in Gaithersburg, MD, but retired from Structural Steel in Baltimore, MD. He stayed home for 1 year and got bored and went back to Standard Supplies where he worked until he was 78 years old. Clarence served in the National Guard 121st Engineers for 4 years. Clarence loved the Lord and spent alot of time in His service. He was an ordained Deacon and Chairman. He worked in the Baptist Association in Howard County and The Convention of Maryland. He worked to build the Baptist Retreat "SKY CROFT" in South Mountain in Frederick, MD. He loved gospel music and would travel out of state to hear it especially to Pigeon Forge, TN. In earlier years Clarence raced his Pontiac and won many Eastern State Championships. He loved Mopar Cars and won many awards for his cars. He never met a stranger, was always singing, and playing his guitars and violins. He will be greatly missed by his family, but their loss is heaven's gain. The family wishes to thank all the nurses at Carroll Hospital for their outstanding care of him during his stay there. We also want to especially thank Carroll Hospice for their many visits and phone calls. They were wonderful to him and so compassionate to our family. All our love forever. Surviving in addition to his wife are children Sherrie Snyder and her husband Ed, Randy Gibson, and Ricky Gibson and his wife Sharon, grandchildren Jeremy and Sherri Cornwell, Jonathan Cornwell, Jordan Ashleigh and Tim Chaffman, Jesse and Melanie Gibson, and Jacob Gibson, great grandchildren Julianna, Scarlett, Kendall, Lincoln, Wyatt, Joel, Caleb and Luke, brothers Olen Gibson, Carl and Luanne Gibson and his brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-law Dennis Shifflett, Maynard Shifflett, Amos and Ginny Shifflett, Billy Shifflett, Wade and Lillian Shifflett, Edna and Howard Hartman, Jean Norwood, Doris and Ed Gran, Darlene and Larry Whittington, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers-in-law Ben Barnard, Lee Norwood, and John Alder, sisters-in-law Vada Thomas, Shirley Alder, Ethel Shifflett, Delores Gibson and Nelly Shifflett, nephews Davey Shifflett and Walter Shifflett, and nieces Bonnie Miller and Donna Humphries. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 2, 2017 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 3, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Keith Corrick, Clarence and Betty's former pastor, officiating. Pallbearers will be Randy Gibson, Rick Gibson, Jesse Gibson, Jacob Gibson, Jeremy Cornwell, Jonathan Cornwell, Ed Snyder, Tim Chaffman, and Dylan Jordan. Those desiring may make donations to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
