Dr. David Samuel Edwards Jr., 88, of Union Bridge, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at home.

Born Sept. 7, 1924, in Erwin, Tenn., he was the son of the late David S. Sr. and Ida Fairfield Edwards. He was the husband of Esther Irene Edwards, who died in 2011.

He was a graduate of Elmer A. Wolfe High School in Union Bridge and of Kansas State University with a degree as a doctor of veterinary medicine. He served in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator and gunner during World War II with the 461st Bomb Group, 15th Air Force, seeing action in the Rhineland, Central Europe and Balkans Campaigns.

He was the recipient of the Air Medal with three bronze clusters and the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 10th U.S.A.F. Reserves. He owned large and small animal veterinary clinics at Union Bridge and Taneytown, practicing for 57 years.

He was a member of Taneytown Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday school for a special needs adult class. He was a member of the Carroll County Farm Bureau, Hesson-Snider American Legion Post of Taneytown, VFW Post 8806 of Union Bridge, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. He served as cub master of Pack No. 459 of Union Bridge and scout master with B.S.A. Troop No. 330 of Union Bridge. He also coached youth baseball in Union Bridge.

Surviving are a daughter, Marcia I. Edwards, of Union Bridge; sons David S. Edwards III and fiancee Karen Krieger, of Edenton, N.C., and Glenn D. Edwards and wife Vicki, of Union Bridge; a daughter-in-law, Laura Edwards, of Littlestown, Pa.; grandchildren Jeff and Todd Edwards, Rachel Yacovicci and husband Adam, Brian and Paul Edwards, Dan Edwards and wife Crystal, Chris Edwards and fiancee Johanna Russell, and Matt Edwards and wife Meghan; great-grandchildren Blaine and Jarrett Edwards; sister Margaret Werner and husband Stewart, of Bassett, Va.; brothers Bennick Edwards and wife Becky, of Knoxville, Tenn. and Billy Edwards and wife Ernie, of Nashville; sisters-in-law Mary Margaret Edwards and Maddaleen Edwards, both of Union Bridge; a brother-in-law, Dan Pickett, of Staunton, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Thomas A. Edwards, who died in 2012; a daughter-in-law, Linda Edwards, who died in 2008; sisters Lillian King, Gladys Edwards and Ina Pickett; and brothers Hyder and Lon Edwards.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday; and from 10 a.m. until the time of service, 11 a.m. Monday at Taneytown Baptist Church, 4150 Sells Mill Road, Taneytown, with the Rev. Les Sims, church pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Pipe Creek Cemetery, near Linwood.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Taneytown Baptist Church, 4150 Sells Mill Road, Taneytown.
