David W. Richards Jr., 64, of Manchester, died Sunday, March 10, 2013, at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore.

Born April 30, 1948, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Ruth and Walter Richards. He was the fiance of Katherine Badders.

He was a lifetime resident of Carroll County and was an active and well-known member of the community. In his youth, he had been a State gymnastics champion representing North Carroll High School, and later was an avid body builder and trainer.

He enjoyed playing Santa every Christmas and did so for 50 years for friends in the Bauerlein family.

Surviving, in addition to his fiance, are many youth that he mentored as his own children, especially Blake Leedy, of Hampstead.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. today at the Hampstead American Legion Post 200, 4600 Legion Lane, Hampstead.

Flowers will be accepted at the Legion on Friday and memorial contributions may be sent, to aid veterans suffering with PTSD, to the Hampstead American Legion Post 200, 4600 Legion Lane, Hampstead, MD 21074.
