DeAnna Louise Salley Hughes, 76, of Eldersburg, formerly of Westminster, died Friday evening, March 14, 2014, at home.

Born Feb. 23, 1938, in Fort Howard, she was the daughter of the late James Earl Salley Sr. and Edith Hare Salley. She was the wife of the late George L. Hughes Sr.

She was a 1957 graduate of Taneytown High School. She worked in several restaurants and factories around the area prior to beginning her career and retiring from the Carroll County Department of Social Services, where she served the disabled and disadvantaged citizens of Carroll County.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, eating crabs, watching her TV shows, playing bingo and playing with her "grand-dog," Allie. She also enjoyed her citizens band radio hobby in years past. She lived with her son and daughter-in-law, George and Deborah, where her grandson, Michael assisted in her care and needs during her golden years.

Surviving are a daughter, Denise L. "Dee" Hughes, of Winsted, Conn.; sons and daughter-in-law George L. Hughes Jr. and Deborah A. Hughes, of Eldersburg, Gary L. Hughes Sr., of Emmitsburg, and James R. Hughes, of Thurmont; grandchildren Daniel L. Hughes, Michael R. Hughes, Gary Lee Hughes Jr., Kevin M. Gardner, Robert L. Gardner Jr. and wife Tina and Kimberly Toms Stewart and husband Jamie; great-grandchildren Sarah M. Hughes, Kaleb M. Machen, Jay W. Stewart III, Makayla C. Stewart, Kristen L. Gardner, Brandi N. Penn, Tyler L. Gardner and Austin R. Gardner; a sister, Dorothy Anderson; a brother-in-law, Waits Jay Hughes; a niece, Shelby Salley Drawbaugh and husband Brian, of Orrtanna, Pa.; nephews James Salley III and Greg Salley; and many other nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, James E. Salley Jr.; a sister, Phyllis Salley Miller Kuhn; a daughter-in-law Tina Grimes Hughes; and a great-granddaughter, Emily M. Gardner.

Per her wishes, her body has been donated to science.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3978 Littlestown Pike, Westminster.
