Mr. Donald Robert Sweitzer, Sr., age 83, of New Windsor, died Sunday, January 29, 2017 at his home. Born June 7, 1933 in Reading, PA, he was the son of the late Luther Moses and Susan Sarah Brown Sweitzer. He was the husband of Mildred T. Dyson Sweitzer, his wife of 62 years. Mr. Sweitzer served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, receiving the Korean Service Medal, 3 Bronze Stars, the National Defense Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Libertytown where he was a 3rd degree with the Knights of Columbus #13290 and a 4th degree K.O.C. in Mt. Airy; the Franciscans and American Legion Post #31 of Westminster. He attended Alsace Township School and Mealenburg High School, Laureldale, PA. He had been employed with W.F. Wilson & Sons and Cherry Hill Sand and Gravel where he retired in 1984 as a heavy equipment mechanic. In addition to his wife he is survived by 4 daughters, Jean Harley and husband Eugene and Joan Patricia Sears, all of MD; June Marie Miller and husband Charlie and Carol Ann Franks and husband Harry, all of WV; 2 sons, Donald R. Sweitzer Jr. and Glenn Alan Sweitzer, both of WV; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Yvonne Kapelski, Ruth Degler and Janet Fick, all of PA; brothers, John, Leon and Jacob Sweitzer, all of PA; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Albert Matthew Sweitzer; daughter, Virginia Rose Sweitzer; sisters, Marjorie Angstadt, Carolyn Pfleger and Laura Warner; and brother, Barry Sweitzer A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Thursday, February 2 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Jason Worley as celebrant. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg. The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home 11802 Liberty Rd., Libertytown on Wednesday, Feb. 1 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of St. Peter's Catholic Church, 9190 Church St., Union Bridge, MD 21791.
