Donald William "Don" Stover, 68, of Las Cruces, N.M., formerly of Finksburg, died Monday, July 16, 2012, in Scottsdale, Ariz., succumbing to pancreatic cancer.
Born March 15, 1944, in Aaronsburg, Pa., he was the son of Oran Stover, of Aaronsburg, and the late Josephine Stover, who died in 2002. He was the husband of Elaine Sawicki Stover, his wife of 45 years.
He was a graduate of DeVry University in Chicago and worked for Allied Signal in Maryland for 35 years. He was involved in numerous NASA projects from early unmanned missions, through the Apollo and space shuttle programs. Before retiring in 1999, he worked at the NASA White Sands Complex in Las Cruces.
He was a charter member of the Old Line Statesmen Barbershop Chorus in Westminster, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Smallwood. He enjoyed woodworking, and built furniture and heirlooms for friends and family. Shortly after retiring he began working with the Habitat for Humanity office in Las Cruces. As a construction supervisor, he participated in the building of more than 50 homes.
Surviving, in addition to his father and wife, are daughters Wendy Martin and husband Charlie, of Parker, Colo., and Mandy Jacobs and husband Kevin, of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; son-in-law Harry Maempel and wife Lisa, of Westminster; and grandchildren Brad, Chris, Katelyn, Connor, Lauren, Rebecca and Isabella.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Amy Maempel, who died in 2000.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, 101 Mill St., Millheim, Pa.
