Dorothy Lee "Dottie" Grumbine, 96, of St. Joseph, Mich., died Friday night, June 28, 2013, at home.

Born Dec. 26, 1916, in Westminster, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Anna Gehr Twigg. She was the wife of the late Walter Klee Grumbine, whom she married June 23, 1939, in Westminster.

In 1935, following high school, she attended Western Maryland College for two years. She then entered Church Home Hospital, affiliated with John Hopkins and graduated with a registered nursing degree in 1938. She moved to New York City and specialized in nursing at Cornell Medical Center.

She was a member of the first Congregational Church and was the first woman on the Board of Trustees. She also served on the Altar Guild for 35 years and was a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood. She served 17 years as chairwoman of the volunteer nurses' aid for American Red Cross.

Surviving are daughter Virginia and husband Frank Brock, of Lathrup Village, Mich.; sons Thomas and wife Janet Grumbine, of Wyoming, Mich., and David and wife Sally Grumbine, of St. Joseph; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Carl Twigg, of Westminster; and a sister, Mary Ada Welliver, of Sykesville.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Lee Grumbine; a brother, Denton Twigg; and a sister, Virgina Twigg.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the First Congregational Church, 2001 Niles Ave., St. Joseph, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Braman officiating. Private interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
