Dwight Harris "Dee" DeGroff Jr., 78, of Finksburg, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at home.

Born July 10, 1935, in Massachusetts, he was the oldest son of the late Dwight H. DeGroff Sr. and Lillian M. Mason. He was the husband of Alice Jean Bixler, his wife of 57 years.

He joined the Navy in 1952 at the age of 17 and retired from the Navy after 21 years, having served during the Korean and Vietnam wars and achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer (CWO2). After a short period of time with Vitro Corporation in Silver Spring, he enjoyed a second career working in Transmitter Operations for Maryland Public Television (Ch 67 -- Owings Mills), retiring in 1987.

He enjoyed a wide variety of activities, including traveling and taking cruises with his wife, woodworking, learning about his family genealogy and talking about old cars. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and was not above using "tricks" when playing games with his grandchildren, who called him "Grandfather."

He was a 40-year member of Sandy Mount United Methodist Church and enjoyed the fellowship with other church members. He was also a plankowner of the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., a Gold Circle member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a contributor to numerous charities.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children Dwight H. III and wife Elizabeth "Beth" MacKenzie, of Finksburg, David Oscar and wife Elizabeth "Lisa" Browne, of Guantanamo Naval Station, and Christopher Charles and wife Lois Beckhardt, of Westminster; grandchildren Dwight E. Sr. and wife Gwen Bitzel, Rachael and husband Ross Billings, Anna, Gregory, Katie, Andrew, Ryan and Katy; great-grandchildren Dwight E. Jr., Levi and Lucy; and siblings Carolyn Joan Krenicki and James Richard DeGroff, and their families.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert T. Wellman, of Sandy Mount United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be at Meadow Branch Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Westminster.
