The Rev. Dwight L. Sheesley, 81, of Littlestown, Pa., died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at home.

Born Dec. 20, 1932, in Port Trevorton, Pa., he was the son of the late Rev. Joseph and Esther Sheesley. He was the husband of Janice Kemp Sheesley, his wife of 55 years.

He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955. He retired in 1988 after 30 years of government service and went on to become a full-time ordained United Methodist minister. Over the last 25 years he served Solley United Methodist Church in Glen Burnie; Union Bridge United Methodist Church; Johnsville United Methodist Church; Trinity United Methodist Church in Emmitsburg; and Catoctin United Methodist Church in Thurmont, and then he returned to Johnsville UMC.

He enjoyed gardening and spending time with family. He was active in the Boy Scouts for more than 50 years, achieving the highest award, the Silver Beaver. Enjoying history, he was a board member of the Strawbridge Shrine Association for several decades.

He was also active as a volunteer at Lovely Lane United Methodist Historical Society and served as a tour guide at the Strawbridge Shrine. He led Bible studies at local nursing homes, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Asera Care Hospice the past few years and received the hospice Volunteer of the Year Award in 2013. He was a member of the Glen Burnie Masonic Lodge No. 213 and received his 50-year pin from Plymouth Lodge No. 143, of Union Bridge.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children and spouses Beverly and George Ford, Cindy and Russell Hash, Kevin and Jane Sheesley; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Ella Mae Holmes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by four sisters; a brother; and a son, Dwight L. Sheesley Jr.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service, 11 a.m. Monday at Johnsville United Methodist Church, 11106 Green Valley Road, Union Bridge, with the Rev. Dr. Wm. Louis Piel, pastor of Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Finksburg, and the Rev. Margaret Moon, Johnsville church pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Glen Haven Cemetery in Glen Burnie.
