Edward John Simmons, 70, entered into the presence of God on Friday, November 6, 2015, at the York Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Ellen (Schwartz) Simmons. They shared forty years together. Born on January 14, 1945, in Frederick, MD, he was the son of the late Dorothy Alice (Haugh) and Robert Carl Simmons, Sr. Ed graduated from Central High School Class of 1964 and attended trade school, majoring in electronics. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. He attended Officer Candidate School. He retired with a record of 40 years safe driving as a truck driver- he drove for PIE, Ryder, CF, and Pro-Pallet. His very early nickname was "Short Man" by his family. He was a member of the Grace U.M. Church, York. Ed was a member of the White Rose Barber Shop Quartet, Life Member of the AACA, Harmony College-York Chorus, Shenandoah Region AACA, Blue and Grey Chapter MTFCA, and Motor Menders Hot Rod Club. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Mary Ellen Simmons, York; children, Krista Dupes, husband Christopher, Browns Mill, MJ, Matthew Simmons, York, Kristin McKee, husband Michael, York, David Schrom, York; eight grandchildren, Jensen, Spenser, Parker, Ryan, Kennedy, Micah, Derrin, Desirae; siblings, Robert Simmons, Jr., Dorothy Keeler, husband Vernon, of Keymar, MD., Stephen Simmons, York; two nieces; one nephew; two great-grandnieces; one great-nephew; and his beloved cats, Scooter and Tigger. The Celebration of Life Services will be on Sunday, November 22, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. at Grace U.M. Church, Broad St., York, PA, with pastor Steve Cowdfer officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Grace U.M. Church, White Rose Barber Shop Quartet, c/o Bruce Van Order, 361 Lakeview Drive, York, PA, 17403; or Gift of Life, 401 M. 3rd St., Philadelphia, PA, 19123. Gladfelter Funeral Home, Inc. is assisting the family.
