Edward Smith, 84, of Hampstead, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at the Dove House in Westminster.

Born May 4, 1928, in Coburn, Va., he was the son of the late John Smith and Betty Lapinski Smith. He was the husband of Mary C. "Connie" Smith, his wife of 20 years.

He was an Army veteran and a member of the Westminster American Legion.

He was a member of Hilltop Assembly of God Church in Westminster and was a retired career firefighter from the Baltimore County Fire Department, where his last station of service was Woodlawn Station No. 3.

He enjoyed working in the vegetable garden; telling tall tales; cooking; watching football, wrestling and Western cowboys; and listening to country music.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children Burton Smith and wife Lora; Christina Bildstein and husband John; step-children Timothy Dixon and wife Gaye; Tami Pulliam; Terry Dixon and wife Julie; Dawn Quisay and husband Frank; and Reed Dixon and wife Gina; 22 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife Ida Jane Smith; siblings Lily Yakubowski, Julia Quisenbury, Laura Cantler, Wanda Wall, Ann Reese, Stella Smith, Agnes Ritter, John, Wiley, Steve and Charlie Smith.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral service Tuesday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, P.A., 3296 Charmil Dr., Manchester.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Gary "Pete" Puckett officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hilltop Assembly of God Church, 30 N. Cranberry Road, Westminster, MD 21157 or to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
