Edward Theodore Welk, 95, of Waco, Texas, formerly of Westminster, and Lehigh Acres, Fla., died Saturday, March 8, 2014.

Born Feb. 16, 1919, he was the son of the late Harry and Florence Welk. He was the husband of Ruth Catherine Dell, his wife of 71 years, who died Nov. 10, 2012.

He grew up near Taneytown and served in the Navy in World War II. He and his wife were married July 5, 1941. He worked for Glenn L. Martin Company, now Lockheed-Martin, near Baltimore, for 28 years; and then for the water department in Westminster, always farming on the side.

He was a member of St. Benjamin's Lutheran Church in Westminster. After retiring to Florida, he was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, helping establish the Memorial Rose Garden and building of the bell tower. He volunteered at the local hospital and Master Gardeners Club.

Surviving are daughters and spouses Janet and Donald Holland, of Waco, Texas, Sharon Welk, of Melbourne, Fla., Sonja and Eddie Johnson, of Westover, Barbara and George Short, of Henderson, and Kathy Welk, of Coatesville, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Helen Carr, of Westminster, Wilda Dell, of Taneytown, and Naomi Welk, of Frizzellburg; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at a later date when he and his wife's ashes will be placed in the Memorial Rose Garden.
