Eileen May Merkle, 76, of Sykesville, died unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.

Born Aug. 22, 1937, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Emory Marshall Zimmerman and Grace Louise Mullineaux Zimmerman. She was the wife of Roland R. "Bud" Merkle, her husband of more than 55 years.

She had been a homemaker for most of her life. She was a 1955 graduate of Catonsville High School. She was a longtime member of Oakland United Methodist Church, where she had been active over the years with the youth, choir and church bazaar. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and Homemakers Club.

She enjoyed traveling, particularly trips to the beach, nature and the outdoors, bird-watching with her husband and helping others. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her 13 grandchildren.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are daughters and sons-in-law Dr. Denise L. Merkle and Dr. Nelson E. Claytor, of Fort Worth, Texas, Daphne A. and Scott E. Dressler, of Sykesville, and Wendy Bopst-Streif and Jeffrey W. Streif, of Jacksonville; son and daughter-in-law Scott R. and Lisa M. Merkle, of Sykesville; a brother, Richard K. Zimmerman, of Lost River, W.Va.; grandchildren Lindsay, Derek, Brian, Grace, Jacob, Alyson, Nick, Elizabeth, Nathalie, Sophie, Kurt, Sadie and Callie; many relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with her pastor, the Rev. Donna Renn, officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park in Sykesville.
