Eleanor Elizabeth Oliver Stipe, 97, longtime resident of Damascus, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, in Frederick.

Born March 28, 1916, in Suffolk, Va., she was the youngest daughter of 13 children of the late G. W. and Annie Powell Oliver. She was the wife of Harry V. Stipe Sr., whom she married in 1942 and who died in 1999.

She met her husband when they were both students and athletes at Shepherd College in West Virginia. After graduation, they were married in 1942 and celebrated their 57th anniversary before his death.

Before her marriage, she taught elementary school and coached basketball in Virginia. She was a rated basketball official as a college student and officiated local high school games and conducted refereeing clinics for the National Referee Association.

Following her marriage and move to Maryland, she taught at schools in Montgomery and Carroll counties. In 1990, she was the first woman elected to the Athletic Hall of Fame at Shepherd University. Both she and her husband were honored to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and were supporters of athletic events at Shepherd, Damascus High School and the community of Damascus.

She served on many civic, community, charitable and church organizations during her life in Damascus.

Surviving are daughter Harriet Ann Stipe Bush and husband David; son George Oliver Stipe and wife Darlene; grandsons Andrew O. Rasa and wife Ida, of Lubbock, Texas, and Robert Anthony Rasa, of Seattle, Wash.; granddaughter Suzanne Stipe Persaud and husband Sean, of Towson; and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Harry V. Stipe Jr.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. David S. Cooney, pastor of Damascus United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at the Damascus United Methodist Church Cemetery.
