Elizabeth Blair Cochran

The Guest Book is expired.

Elizabeth Blair Cochran (101) died April 20, 2015 at the Fairhaven Community, Sykesville, MD. Mrs. Cochran had lived at Fairhaven for 27 years, the last five in the Health Center. She is survived, by her three children: Anne Sloan of Annapolis, MD; Frank Cochran of New Haven, CT; and Thomas Cochran of Newfoundland, NJ; by six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and by numerous nephews, nieces and caregivers. Born in 1913 in Oak Park, IL, Mrs. Cochran graduated from Swarthmore College in 1935, the first woman in her family to attain a higher education degree. Following graduation she was employed for several years as a social worker and planner in Chicago's public housing programs reporting to public housing pioneer Elizabeth Wood. It was there that she met her future husband. She was a life-long advocate for low-income housing in sustainable mixed-income neighborhoods, working principally through the League of Women Voters chapters in the communities in which she lived. She and Frank Lee Cochran (1913 - 2009) were married in 1939 and lived in Illinois until 1964, when they moved to Bethesda, MD. A regular summer resident of the Pinewoods Association on Higgins Lake, Roscommon, MI, from 1952, in 1965 she induced Lee to purchase "Homefree", remove decaying additions she referred to as "excrescences" and build a new cottage; both have been occupied by the far-flung family each of the ensuing 50 summers. Elizabeth Cochran obtained a master's degree in education from Lake Forest College, served on the Swarthmore alumni council, and guided her children and grandchildren through adolescence and college. At Pinewoods she was widely known as "Aunt" Liz and appreciated for her skill as a listener to members of all ages. A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Elizabeth Cochran will be held on Mother's Day, May 10, at 2:30 pm at the Fairhaven Chapel, 7200 3rd Ave., Sykesville, MD. Memorial gifts may be sent to Integrace (operators of Fairhaven) at 576 Johnsville Rd., Eldersburg, MD 21784, designating the Beall Scholarship Fund, or to the Higgins Lake Foundation, 207 Terrace Dr., Roscommon, MI 48653.
