Elizabeth Garver Wantz, age 98 1/2, formerly of New Windsor, MD, died Tuesday, January 31, 2017, following an extended illness. Born July 20, 1918, in Carroll County, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Fannie Quinn Garver. Her husband of 40 years, Walter Pickett Wantz, predeceased her in 1979. Always caring about children, Elizabeth's first venture in this direction was a small, private kindergarten. From there she joined the ranks of public school teachers. She first taught second grade at New Windsor Elementary School, and after the schools merged, she taught second grade at Elmer Wolfe Elementary School, Union Bridge, for a total of 20 plus years. Her professional education was completed at Towson State University, where she met all education requirements. She was a member of the Carroll County Teacher's Association. She was also a lifelong member of the Linwood Brethren Church, where among other positions she taught an adult Sunday school class for 50 years. Surviving is a daughter, Jane Buckey Wantz of Westminster; a brother, E. Buckey Garver of New Windsor; three nephews, Paul Garver of Taneytown, Richard Garver of Westminster, Robert Garver of Canby, OR; and three nieces, Melissa Goodwin of Hanover, PA, Sarah Jane Silverman of Westminster, and Elaine Molar of Hampstead. She was predeceased by a brother, Paul S. Garver in 2015. There will be no public visitation. A private graveside service will be held at St. Benjamin's Kriders Cemetery, Westminster at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 18 at Linwood Brethren Church, 575 McKinstry's Mill Rd., Union Bridge, with Rev. Dan Ceary, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Linwood Brethren Church, 575 McKinstry's Mill Rd., Union Bridge, MD 21791; or Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD, 21157. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hartzler Funeral Home, New Windsor.
