Elmer G. Mertz, 80 of Sykesville, died Friday, March 6, 2015 at Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster. Born August 22, 1934 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Elmer C. and Esther Lutz Mertz. He was the husband of Patricia Mertz of Sykesville. He had been a lineman foreman with the Elliot Company. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage, fishing with his great grandson, and woodworking. Surviving in addition to his wife are children Valerie Mertz of Westminster, and Steven Mertz of Hampstead, brother Ronald Mertz and his wife Dixie of Woodbine, sister Sandra Davis and husband Bill of New Windsor, 5 granddaughters, 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Stanley R. Mertz, and by his great grandson Robert Allen Piper. The family will receive friends at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Rd., Sykesville on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Interment in Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Carroll Hospice Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
