Elva Winifred Powers Hughes, 96, of Westminster, died Sunday, March 31, 2013, at Carroll Hospice's Dove House.

Born Feb. 2, 1917, in Cleveland, Va., she was the daughter of the late Virginia Counts Powers and Trigg Powers. She was the wife of Robert C. Hughes, who died Feb. 14, 2002.

Before retiring, she worked 35 years at a sewing factory and 17 years at Black & Decker. She enjoyed baking and cooking for family and friends. She was an avid gardener who canned fruits and vegetables. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster. "Mimi" or "Mamaw"was a mother figure to many of the children in the family.

Surviving are daughters Constance Kiser, Marlene Taylor, Gaylene Forry, Tammy Dofflemyer and Lisa Little; a sister, Lucy Bell; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Lansing Powers; and a daughter, Lorice Gilotte.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the time of a memorial service, 4 p.m. Saturday at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster. Inurnment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
