Elwood W. Michael, 88, of Hampstead, entered God's eternal care Saturday December 6, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born November 24, 1926 in Upperco, MD, he was the son of the late Curvin L. and Missouri Sparks Michael. He was the husband of the late Marjery E. Michael who died in 2013. He was a 1943 graduate of Franklin High School. He served in the United States Army near the conclusion of WWII, being assigned to the Coast Artillery Corps at various Harbor Defenses along the East Coast. He then continued his education, earning an Associate Degree in Accounting from Baltimore College of Commerce, now the University of Baltimore, in 1949. He graduated from Baltimore School of the Bible in 1961 and successfully completed the Dale Carnegie Course in Effective Speaking in 1969. He was a member of Grace Bible Church for 42 years, serving his church as financial secretary, treasurer, elder and member of the tellers team and usher team. He did extensive volunteer work for Hampstead Youth for Christ for over 50 years. He was on the Board of Directors for Westminster Rescue Mission where he was president over 20 years and was a member of the Hanover Christian Business Men's Committee. Mr. Michael began his career as parts manager for a John Deere dealership owned by his uncle in Upperco. After purchasing a farm in the Hampstead area of Carroll County in 1949, he actively pursued farming for about eighteen years. In 1966 he accepted a position with the Comptroller of the Treasury, State of MD. He retired from that position as a Field Audit Supervisor in 1990. He then returned to his farm working with a small firewood business and various other activities. A prolific reader, he enjoyed reading Christian literature and biographies of people who did well in life. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling to 49 different states with his wife. Surviving are daughters & sons-in-law, Debra Elaine & Keith Siegman of Westminster, and Denise Lynn & Barry Griffith of Westminster; sons & daughters-in-law, David Leroy & Lora Michael of Hampstead, and Donald Edward & Theresa Michael of Hanover, PA. Also survived by grandchildren Kendall Rosenberger, Kyle Michael, Kenny Siegman, Kelli Thomas and Lauren Griffith; great-grandsons Tyler and Trevor Rosenberger; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Grace Bible Church, 3250 Charmil Drive, Manchester. Pastor Paul Wenzel will officiate. Interment will be in Grace United Methodist Cemetery.
