Ernest C. Schroeder, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. Better known as "Ernie" and "Pop", he was born on November 7, 1923 in Baltimore, Maryland and was the youngest of three children. He graduated from McDonogh School in 1942. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as an aerial engineer in the Pacific Ocean theatre during World War II. He also served in the Korean War and the Air Force Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1962. After his military career, he worked as a machinist at Westinghouse and then Micro Machining. In 1961, while working at Westinghouse, he met his loving wife, Sandra Lee, and they were married on September 5, 1964. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandy, and four children: daughter and son-in-law Carol and Gary Baxter, son Mark Schroeder, daughter Cindy Chill, and daughter and son-in-law Pam and Ron Hayes; six grandchildren: Scott Baxter, Brooke Wilkins, Nicholas Hayes, Ryan Keyser, Cole Hayes and Kaitlin Chill; and one great granddaughter, Chloe Keyser. Ernie was a kind, gentle and humble man. He was a dedicated family man and a loyal friend. After retiring in 1989, he spent most of his time helping others. He loved to share stories about his time at McDonogh School as a young man and his time in the military. He loved the beach and enjoyed mowing his lawn, picking up sticks in the yard, going to the gym, and spending time with his wife, family and friends. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 21 at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel in Sykesville. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22 at the funeral home. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Dove House in Westminster or the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
