Eugene Francis Bankard, 87, near Emmitsburg, entered into eternal peace with his family by his side on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. Born September 25, 1927 in Taneytown, he was the son of the late Sargent D. and Emma R. Frock Bankert. He was the husband of Dorothy E. Bankard, his wife of nearly 69 years. Mr. Bankard served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, stationed in Okinawa. He was raised a farmer and retired from Moore Business Forms, Thurmont. After retirement he returned to farming, raising registered Black Angus cattle and gardening. He was the owner/operator of Gene's Gun Shop for more than 50 years when he closed his shop and dispersed the inventory in 2013. He was a lifetime member of Emmitsburg VFW, #6658; Taneytown Rod and Gun Club; National Rifle Association; and a former member of Blue Ridge Sportman's Club. He enjoyed socializing with friends made at DaVita on Thomas Johnson Drive. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons, Eugene Noah Bankard of Norfolk, VA, Arthur H. Bankard and wife, Karen of Daytona, FL, Sargeant "Dave" Bankard Sr. and wife, Jeanne of Severn; daughter, Mary Ellen Richard and husband, Gary Jr. of Walkersville; grandchildren, Tammy J. Sizemore, Jeremie Gremler, Jessica, S. David Jr. and Nina Bankard, and Gary III and Carilynn Richard; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jennifer Keown; brother, Sargent D. Bankard; and a sister, Dorothy Stoner. The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro on Friday, Jan. 9 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. Pastor Les Sims, of Taneytown Baptist Church, will officiate. Military interment will be in Meadow Branch Cemetery, Westminster. Memorial contributions may be made to the at www.kidney.org/support.
