Born Sept. 16, 1926, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Norris Franklin and Helen Ridinger Sell. He was the husband of the late Pearl Bollinger Sell, his wife of 47 years, who died in 2009.

He was a 1943 graduate of Taneytown High School. He was a veteran of the Army Air Force, serving during World War II in the Marianas and the Philippines. He was employed by Baumgardner's Bakery in Taneytown for 44 years. He also worked at Martin's, Jubilee and Kennie's Food Markets.

He was a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown, where he served in Social Ministry, Church Council, and Adult Sunday School class. He enjoyed the music of the 20s, 30s, and 40s and played trombone with the Taneytown IOOF Junior Band, the Westminster Municipal Band and Gene Frock's Dance Band. He would often be found in the spring and summer working in his garden. When not in his garden, he could be found in the kitchen baking delicious pies and his famous sticky buns for family and friends, or listening to his music and playing the trombone.
