Age 90, died Monday, December 8, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born November 18, 1924, a lifelong resident of Hampstead, MD, the son of the late Millard and Treva Utz. He is survived by his wife Betty Reed Dovell Utz, his wife of 45 years. He attended Hampstead High School and was a WWII vet drafted by the Army Air Corp at age 18. He served his country from 1942 until 1945 as a flight engineer on a B-17 flying 27 missions over Germany. Following an honorable discharge and receiving his wings and many medals and ribbons he was enlisted in the Air Force Reserve from 1945-1958. He documented his experiences and missions in a detailed journal and enjoyed speaking to history classes in Hereford and North Carroll High Schools. He attended the Veterans Day program at NCHS every year but was unable to attend this year due to his sudden decline in health. He was member of Hampstead American Legion Post 200 and life member of Molleville Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 467, in Westminster. He was best known for his passion of fishing and was a member of North Carroll Bass Anglers. He spent many summers on the bay in Ocean City fishing on his boat with his wife. He enjoyed hunting in his earlier years. He also had a tremendous love of gardening, tending his rose bushes and working his daily crossword puzzles. He was employed as an auto mechanic at Wheeler Chevolet in Hampstead for 30 years followed by working on heavy duty equipment at Gray and Son, Butler MD, for 10 years until his retirement in1990. He is survived by daughters Linda Dovell Greenwood and husband Bob of Hampstead, Celesa Dovell Hagan and husband Todd of York, PA, brothers Wilbert (Doris) Utz of Mt. Airy, Marlin (Barb) Utz of Manchester, Nevin (Nancy) Utz of Las Vegas NV, Maretta (Bob) Warner of Hampstead, MD; sisters-in-laws, Helen Utz of Hampstead, Nancy Utz of Hanover, PA. Grandchildren, Rob and Jen Greenwood of Hampstead, Joe and Chelsea Hagan of Loganville PA, Sara Hagan of Imperial Beach CA, Jacob Hagan of Windsor PA, and Deni Greenwood of Finksburg, MD. Great grandchildren Kaiyli and Shae Greenwood, Finksburg MD, Makenzie and Jameson Greenwood, Hampstead, MD and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by brothers, Maynard and Clyde Utz and grandson Tim Greenwood. Per his wishes his body was donated to the Maryland Board of Anatomy. A memorial service provided by Hampstead American Legion Post 200 and officiated by Rev. Melissa Rudolph will be held at St Johns United Methodist Church, Hampstead, Md on January 24, 2015 at 2 PM. Memorial contributions may be sent in his memory to North Carroll Gridiron Club, 1400 Panther Drive, Hampstead, MD 21074.
