Fred A. Pelaia, 88, of Hanover, Pa., died Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at the Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, Pa.

Born Feb. 22, 1926, in Newark, N.J., he was the son of the late Louis and Ida Guarino Pelaia. He was the husband of Mary C. Murphy Pelaia, his wife of 60 years.

He was a 1951 graduate of Seton Hall University in New Jersey. He was a veteran of the Navy, having served his country in World War II in the Pacific Theater on an LCI-992 Ship. He was employed for many years at Worthington Pump Company in Maryland as a controller.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hanover, Pa. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Hanover.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons Thomas Pelaia and his wife Maria, of Livingston, N.J., Donald Pelaia, of Hanover, Paul Pelaia and wife Deborah, of Spring Grove, Pa., Mark Pelaia, of Hanover, Pa.; daughters Marian Meola and husband Anthony, of Newport Coast, Calif., and Cathy Smith and husband Steven, of Harrisburg, Pa.; grandchildren Matthew Meola and wife Erin, Gregory Meola, Lindsay Meola, Lauren Pelaia and Alex Pelaia; a great-granddaughter, Abby Meola; a sister, Rose D'Alessio, of Tom's River, N.J.; and a brother, Carmen Pelaia, of Randolph, N.J.

He was predeceased by a brother, Salvatore Pelaia.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kenworthy Funeral Home, 269 Frederick St., Hanover, with a prayer service at 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover, with the Rev. Stephen Kelley as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery in Hanover, with the Allied Veterans Honor Guard providing military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Pennsylvania, 2595 Interstate Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
