Garnett S. "Sandy" Houchins, 88, of Reisterstown, died Saturday at the Stella Maris Hospice.

Born Feb. 17, 1924, in Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of the late Burley Houchins and Myrtle Grace Hicks Houchins. He was the husband of Ann Hamilton Houchins. He was predeceased by wife Lois Houchins.

He graduated from Bluefield High School in Bluefield and attended Bluefield College until enlisting in the military.

He served with the Army Air Corps during WWII in the Pacific before being discharged with the rank of Captain. He was a pilot flying B25's and P61's, the majority of his 100 plus flights were at night as a night fighter. He was shot down three times. He sustained injuries twice and the third time resulted in him being labeled MIA for five months. He was found by New Guinea natives. He was a recipient of the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was a master electrician and owned a commercial electric company, called Houchins Electric, for 45 years. After retiring, he drove cars for Allines Co.

He enjoyed yachting since he was 16, was commodore of Ventnor Yacht Club and the last surviving charter member. He was commodore of Chesapeake Commodore's Club and a charter member. He was a member of the Glen Burnie Elks Club. He enjoyed traveling, piloting his boat, hunting and sport fishing.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his daughters, Brenda Poulton, of North Carolina; and Denise Nerenberg, of Reisterstown; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his daughter Nancy Lauenroth.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be held in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 2800 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg.
