Gary Wayne Wunderlich, 63, of Westminster, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 28, surrounded by his family. He was born in Woodstock, Illinois on March 8, 1951 to Ione Wunderlich and the late Orville Wunderlich. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1969 and then attended Virginia Tech where he graduated in 1973. He was employed for 30 years by the Maryland Department of Health and largely worked in the public health sector, first at the AIDS Administration and then as the Chief of Cardiovascular Health and Nutrition before retiring. He was active throughout his retirement, frequently hiking with his dog Shep and even working as an usher for the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Maggie and Evan Verdoia of Santa Clara, CA, his son, Tim Wunderlich of Hanover, NH, his mother Ione Wunderlich, two brothers, David and Fred Wunderlich and two sisters, Janet Root and Lynn Jones. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and his significant other, Donna DeLuca. His unique sense of humor, love of the outdoors, and strength through adversity will forever live in our hearts. Services will be held at a later date. As Gary desired progress towards innovative health and wellness care, please send donations to the National Institutes of Health at (301) 402-5311 in lieu of flowers.
