George Franklin Atwell Sr., 69, of Taneytown, died Sunday, June 24, 2012, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born May 13, 1943, in Marion, Va., he was the son of the late George and Catherine Cullop Atwell. He was the husband of Lennie Hipsley Atwell, his wife of 49 years.

He was a carpenter. He had worked for South Carroll and Sandusky Construction companies. He was an avid Orioles, Nationals and Ravens fan. He enjoyed gardening, yard work, sitting out on the back deck of his home, and spending time with family and friends.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters Karen Lindsay, of Taneytown, Lisa Porter and husband Mark Sr., of New Windsor, and Cathy Atwell, of Westminster; a son, Frank Atwell, of Littlestown, Pa.; sisters Judy Ledford, of Johnson City, Tenn., and Sue Mariner, of Virginia; brothers Danny Atwell and wife Dana, of Sykesville, Mickey Atwell and wife Marica, of Florida, and Mike Atwell and wife Nancy, of Gettysburg, Pa.; grandchildren Mark Porter Jr., Amber Shelley, Bryan Lindsay, Lilly, Jake and Jesse Atwell, and Taylor O'Hara; great-grandchildren Delaney and Blake Shelley; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Rachel Atwell; and a brother, Ronald Atwell.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert C. Wills Jr., of Mayberry First Church of God, officiating. Interment will follow at Harmony Cemetery in Howard County.
