George Gassaway "Gass" Gilliss, 98, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at Golden Living Rehab Center.

Born Oct. 9, 1915, in Florence, he was the son of the late Charles and Victoria Gilliss. He was the husband of the late Annie Margaret Myers Gilliss.

He was a horticulturalist by trade, and it was also his passion. He enjoyed raising orchids, kept a daily journal, and reading, especially author Zane Grey.

He liked going to breakfast every morning and enjoying the company of friends.

Surviving are children Louis Gilliss and wife Phyllis, of Sykesville, Martha Femi and husband Ted, of Cumberland, Donna Gilliss, of Richmond, Va., and Martin Gilliss and wife Debbie, of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; grandchildren Debbie Grimes, David Hardman, Brian Hardman, Christine Cunningham and husband Brian, Holly Peck and husband Frank, Heather Thomas and husband Terry, and Heidi Miller and husband Gene; great-grandchildren Cameron and Matthew Gilliss, Danielle Derr and husband Dale, Brandon Webb and wife Bridget, Blake Cunningham, Faith and Camdyn Peck, Tysen and Keegan Ott, Brynn Thomas, and Elena and Noah Miller; and a great-great-granddaughter, Shyanne Webb.

He was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters.

Per his wishes, he was cremated.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Poplar Springs Cemetery.
