George J. Davies (1930 - 2013)

George John Davies, 83, of Hanover, Pa., died Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at Transitions Healthcare Nursing Home in Gettysburg, Pa.

Born Feb. 16, 1930, in Sea Cliff, N.Y., he was the son of the late Mary Ann and George Talbott Davies. He was the husband of Muriel Asplen Davies, his wife of 60 years.

He served in the Marine Corps between 1947 and 1953, being one of a squad of 13 Marines sent to Jerusalem to guard the American Embassy. He also served one year in Korea.

He worked for the now-defunct Thompson Wire Company in Sparrows Point for 10 years and retired from Verizon in Baltimore after 20 years.

He was commander of the American Legion Post 116 in Reisterstown for two years.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter Kellie Doherty and husband Daniel, of Manchester; grandsons Sean Doherty and Jack Doherty, of Manchester, and Travis Davies, of Reisterstown; granddaughters Amanda Davies, of Reisterstown, and Sarah Rahim, of Baltimore; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Hayes; and a son, George H. Davies.

Per his request, following cremation there will be a private service at a later date.

Arrangements are by Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory in Hanover.
