George L. Stem, 73, of Littlestown, Pa., died on Monday, August 21, 2017, at York Hospital. Born on April 20, 1944 in Silver Run, he was the son of the late Truman Levine Stem and Margaret Stem Hyde. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Betty S. Stem. Before retiring he worked as a Soil Conservationist for the USDA. He graduated from Westminster High School in 1962 and was on the football team. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1966. He played football at Maryland and received the Outstanding Senior Athletic Award and the Unsung Hero Award. He was a charter member of the Carroll County Chargers and was a charter member of the Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of Redeemers United Church of Christ in Littlestown, a member of the M Club, and the Terrapin Club. He was an avid golfer and sports fan. Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Kelly Rumbaugh and husband Bill of Manchester, a son, Dr. Jesse L. Stem and wife Kristin of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., brothers, Harold L. Stem of Westminster, David W. Stem and his wife Sue of New Oxford, Pa., and sister-in-law Betty Stem of Westminster. Also survived by 13 grandchildren, 3 great grand-children, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Truman and Charles E. Stem. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at Fletcher Funeral and Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster, with Pastors Bill Rumbaugh and Sterling Fritz co-officiating. Interment will be at Meadow Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The family requests casual attire the day of the funeral service. All are invited to attend a tailgate reception at Westminster Baptist Church parking lot after service. Memorial contributions can be made to the George Stem Football Scholarship Fund, c/o Community Foundation of Carroll County, 255 Clifton Blvd, Suite 313, Westminster, Md. 21157.
