George W. Reaver, 83, of Taneytown, died peacefully Saturday, April 5, 2014, at home surrounded by his family.

Born May 20, 1930, in Taneytown, he was the son of the late Charles B. and Carrie V. Dutterer Reaver. He was the husband of Nina L. Shernan Reaver, his wife of 58 years.

He served in the Army from 1947 to 1952 as part of the military police in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he partnered with his two brothers to form Chas. B. Reaver Trucking Company. He enjoyed playing cards and shooting pool, as well as playing with his grandchildren.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children Melody S. Reaver Higginbotham, of St. Louis, Mo., and George C. Reaver, of Finksburg; grandchildren Kent Jr. and Erin Higginbotham, Kacey Higginbotham Kell and husband Matthew Kell, Frankie and wife Lindsay Reaver, and Kelsey Reaver; a great-grandchild, Nicholas Conway; sisters Helen McAvoy and husband John, of Riverside, Calif., C. June Ripley and husband Allen, and Mabel Johnson, all of Keymar; and a brother, Frank, of Laurel.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home,136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Steven Ostendorf officiating. Interment will be immediately after the service at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Gettysburg, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Grace United Church of Christ, 49 W. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD 21787; or to Taneytown Volunteer Fire Company, 39 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD  21787.
