Gordon Kingsley Harden Sr., 96, of Owings Mills, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born March 2, 1918, in Owings Mills, he was the son of the late Guy Tyson Harden Sr. and the late Cecile Kingsley Harden. He was the husband of Laverne Harden, his wife of 69 years.

He was known for the pleasure he took in being the patriarch of his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He lived in Owings Mills most of his life and was very active in his community.

He served in the Navy, and while serving he was assigned to the Army Air Corps and was assigned as station manager at Pan American Airlines for 10 years. For five of those years, during World War II, he worked in Northern Africa. In 1948 he moved from New York back to Owings Mills to take over the Farm Bureau Insurance Agency, which became Nationwide Insurance in 1955, and he retired in 1983.

He was a founding member of Piney Branch Golf Club. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 52 years and the Shriners for 51 years. He was president of the ROMG Chamber of Commerce in 1962. He moved to Carroll Lutheran Village in 2005.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters Suzann and husband Bruce Carson, of Finksburg, and Karen Harden Freedman and husband Steven, of Reisterstown; son Gordon Kingsley Harden Jr. and wife Katherine, of Towson; grandchildren Jacqueline Zapp-Albin, of Portland, Oregon, Erin Obriecht, of Baltimore, Ben Freedman, of Baltimore, Gina Land, of Spring Creek, Nevada, Celia Perez, of Washington, D.C., Deana Harden, of Towson, Anna Freedman, of Baltimore, Gordon K. Harden III, of Pasadena, California, and Francisco Harden Garcia, of Sonoma, California; step-grandchildren Michael Farrell and Casey Farrell; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until the time of service, 5 p.m. Sunday at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown; and from 11 a.m. until time of memorial service, noon Monday at Carroll Lutheran Village, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 3006 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg, MD 21048; or the Carroll Lutheran Village Endowment Fund, attn: Philanthropy Department, 300 St. Luke Circle Westminster, MD 21158.
