Grace S. Rand

Grace S. Rand, 94, of Westminster, formerly of Reisterstown, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster.

Born June 23, 1919, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Edmund S. and Myrtle Dowell Scull. She was married to the late William T. Rand Jr.

She lived and went to school in Sparrow's Point near Bethlehem Steel, where her father worked. She attended Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College, and taught fifth grade at Sparrow's Point. She worked at Enoch Pratt Library and at Fort Holabird during WWII, where she met her husband. After her two children were born, she lived in Dundalk and subsequently in Randallstown and Reisterstown. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 1968 and a Master of Science from Johns Hopkins in 1972, both in education.

She was a school librarian for Patapsco Elementary in Dundalk, Randallstown Elementary, Franklin Elementary and Hernwood Elementary in Randallstown the first year it opened. She retired from the Baltimore County school system after 23 years of service.

She loved to travel and especially enjoyed trips to Japan, Canada and Alaska, Europe and Israel. She visited her daughter at a Peace Corps assignment in Tunisia. She was always an avid reader and a Marylander at heart, and she loved the Chesapeake Bay.

Surviving are a son, William T. "Ted" Rand III, of Upperco; a daughter, Grace Rand Nelson, of Rockport, Texas; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Carroll Lutheran Village or the Reisterstown United Methodist Church.
