Guy W. Covert Jr., 83, of Hampstead, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at the Dove House Hospice in Westminster.

Born Feb. 22, 1929, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Guy Wilson Covert Sr. and Lydia E. King Covert. He was the husband of Joan A. Brinker Covert, his wife of 60 years.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1948 to 1952, achieving the rank of sergeant.

In 1955, he joined the Baltimore City Police Department, NW District, where he served for 25 years. He retired in September 1980. Afterward, he was employed at Sinai Hospsital and Carroll Community College.

He enjoyed camping trips, travel, baking, caring for his home and garden, tinkering in his garage, and helping others.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters Lydia Elizabeth Friedman, of Hampstead, Anna Marie Zelinski, of Galloway, N.J., Patricia Jo Tolley, of Washington, D.C., Barbara Jane Graves, of Suwanee, Ga., Genia Covert, of Fairmont, W.Va., and Jane Marie Covert, of Owings Mills; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 2930 Hanover Pike, Manchester, with the Rev. Michael Roach as celebrant. Inurnment will follow at 1 p.m. in the columbarium at the Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery in Owings Mills.
