He was a member of the Mount Airy Lions Club, the Mount Airy Chapter of the VFW, and a past commander of Gold Star American Legion Post 191. He was also a member of both the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company and the Auxiliary to the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company, earning the President's award for service.
As a result of his years serving the town, he was inducted into the Mount Airy Hall of Fame. He was a member of the PT Boaters Association, keeping in close contact with many Navy friends. He enjoyed woodworking, boating, gardening, golf, horseshoes, traveling the world with his wife, but above all of these, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
