Harold "Digger" Odell, 93, of Brevard, N.C., died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, in Brevard.

Born April 8, 1919, in Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of Cora Hustis and Edward Odell, who died when he was an infant. He was the husband of Lois Phillips Odell, his wife of 66 years.

He was raised and educated in Pleasantville, N.Y.

A veteran of World War II, he served in China, the CBI for three years, and the signal corps. Upon his discharge in 1945, he went to work for American Airlines in New York City and as sales manager of Westchester County in 1980.

After his marriage at St. John's Catholic Church on May 10, 1947, he and his wife lived in White Plains for 39 years, where he was active in many civic organizations. He was known for his sense of humor.

They moved to Connestee Falls in Brevard in 1986, where he enjoyed playing golf with his friends for 18 years. Before moving to College Walk Retirement Community in 2004, he enjoyed traveling and visited the 50 states and many foreign countries. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Robert Matuszak, of Eldersburg; son and daughter-in-law John and Maryanne Odell, of Malvern, Pa.; grandchildren Melissa and husband Vince Powell, of Stewartstown, Pa., Robert Matuszak Jr., of Reisterstown, and Christopher and Benjamin Odell of Malvern; great-grandsons Alex and Michael Powell; a sister-in-law, Helen Pinchbeck, of Fort Meyers, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers and a sister.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
