Harry B. Beard Jr., 87, of Westminster, died Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Carroll Hospice's Dove House.

Born March 12, 1927, in Sandymount, he was the son of the late Harry B. and Margie Brown Beard. Twice married, he was the husband of Doris Lockard Beard, who died in 2002; and of Anna Mae Melown Beard.

He attended secondary schools in Westminster and was a 1944 graduate of Westminster High School. He attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering in 1948. While at Hopkins, he was elected to Tau Beta Phi, the national honorary engineering fraternity.

He worked for the Maryland State Roads Commission, now the State Highway Administration, from 1948 to 1956, with the exception of two years serving in the Army during the Korean War.

In 1956, he began a 35-year career with Whitman, Requardt & Associates, a consultant engineering firm. As an associate with the firm, he was the project manager for several major projects in the mid-Atlantic area, including planning and design of Interstate 64 in Norfolk, Virginia, a section of Interstate 66 in Arlington, Virginia, and sections and stations of the Washington area subway system. He also served the company as its traffic engineer. He was an expert witness and testified before numerous county governments and in many courts.

He was a registered professional engineer in several states, including Maryland, New York and North Carolina. He was a Fellow in The American Society of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Transportation Engineers.

He was a member of the Westminster United Methodist Church for 58 years and served as head usher for 25 years. He was a member of the Westminster Rotary Club since 1964 and was honored with a Paul Harris Fellowship in 2004. He was a ballroom dancer and interested in Broadway shows.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a sister, Dolores LeGore, of Finksburg; nephews Kenneth LeGore, of Finksburg, and Michael LeGore, of Westminster; stepdaughters and spouses Sandra and Alvin Keefer, of Westminster, and Luanne and Edward Kovalcik, of Gaithersburg; and step-grandchildren John Robert Keefer, Joshua Keefer, Anna Kovalcik and Christopher Kovalcik.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster; and from 1 p.m. until the time of service, 2 p.m. Friday at Westminster United Methodist Church, 165 East Main St., Westminster, with the Rev. Shari McCourt officiating. Interment will be held at Sandymount Cemetery.
