Harry Jerome Bezold, 89, of Mount Airy, died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at home.

Born April 29, 1925, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Henry Joseph and Helen Drury Bezold.  Twice married, he was the husband of Catherine Fitzgerald Bezold, who died in 1963; and of Gloria Theresa Leggo Bezold, who died in 2003.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, seeing action in the Pacific Theater. He was employed as a letter carrier for 30 years with Carroll Station in Baltimore City and Catonsville Station in Baltimore County.

He was an active member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in  Libertytown, where he served as an usher and volunteered in numerous capacities.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus and volunteered for many years with the soup kitchen at St. John Catholic Church in Westminster. He was a "Renaissance Man" who built his two homes and many other projects, as well as assisting family and friends. He was a lifelong student, always learning, to satisfy his inquisitive nature and enjoyed tinkering and photography.

Surviving are daughter Helen Theresa "Terry" Ferguson and husband Donald, of Annapolis; sons Henry Joseph "Joe" Bezold and wife Laurie, of Catonsville, George Andrew "Skip" Sotack, of Florida, Gregg Steven Sotack, of North Carolina, and Blaise Alexander Bezold, of Mount Airy; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a son-in-law, Jean-Marie Sacré, of Nice, France.

He was predeceased by daughters Lisa Mary Sotack, who died in 2002, and Mary Catherine "Cathy" Sacré, who died in 2011; and two brothers.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Road, Libertytown, where a Christian wake service will be held at 7:45 p.m.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Libertytown, with Monsignor John Dietzenbach as celebrant. Inurnment will take place at a later date in St. Peter's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Peter's Catholic Church, c/o Building Fund, P.O. Box 278, Libertytown, MD 21762; or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
