Helen Agnes Long Bogusky, age 92, of Mount Gilead, OH and formerly of Westminster, MD, passed away Monday morning, June 8, 2015, at Morrow Manor in Chesterville, OH. On November 28, 1922, Helen was born in Pine Summit, PA, the daughter of the late W. Clyde and Sarah Eva (Gordner) Long. At an early age she learned the value of hard work by helping her paternal grandparents on their farm. During the Great Depression, her family moved to Baltimore and she worked as a housekeeper for a family in the city. Helen graduated from Millville High School in PA. She and her lifelong best friend, Althea Minier, decided to go to nursing school after the attack on Pearl Harbor. They graduated from Bloomsburg Nursing School in PA on May 29, 1944. Following graduation, Helen joined The Army Nurse Corps and served in the Philippines and Japan during World War II. Over the years Helen shared many stories of her experiences and was always very proud of her military service. After returning from the service, Helen began a long career at Westinghouse as a nurse. It was there she met her future husband, George Bogusky. They were married on February 19, 1955 in Baltimore, MD. Helen and George were unable to have children, having lost two sets of premature twins. They shared close to 50 years together before he preceded her in death in 1993. Helen's sister, Alice, talked her into moving to Mount Gilead, OH after George's passing. The two of them became inseparable. Helen became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She and Alice enjoyed cooking meals for the church, buying groceries for group homes, being involved in the Morrow County Kennel Club, and spent winters together in Florida. After Alice passed away in 2001, Helen's nieces, nephew, and great nieces became her close family. Helen will be dearly missed by her nephew, Michael (Judith) Bardo of Bradford, OH; two nieces: Marilyn Bardo Turner and Suzanne (Guy) Cornish, both of Mount Gilead; three great nieces: Beth Fitzpatrick and her children: Madison, Turner, and Rowan of Mount Gilead, Brandi Clark and her children: Chloe, Caden, and Cooper of Piqua, OH, Michelle (Mark) Johnson and their children: Victoria and Lauren of New Richmond, WI; a brother-in-law, B. Clair Bardo of Mount Gilead; and her lifelong friend, Althea Minier of Muncie, PA. Her family will greet friends from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 75 E. High St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338. Services honoring her life will be held at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Lori Burdette-Steele officiating. Military honors will be held there provided by the active duty U.S. Army, V.F.W. Post 8054, and AmVets Post 87. Burial will take place at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Mt. Airy, MD. Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or the Humane Society of Morrow County. Snyder Funeral Homes of Mount Gilead are honored to have been chosen to serve Helen's family, and your condolences may be expressed to them by visiting:
