Helen Bickel Wolfe, 79, of Westminster, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Carroll Hospice's Dove House in Westminster.

Born Jan. 25, 1934, in Buffalo, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Helen McIntyre Bickel. She was the wife of the Rev. Charles E. Wolfe, whom she married in 1968.

She was an alumna of Buffalo State College, who honored her as a distinguished alumna, and taught for 10 years in the Kenmore, N.Y., school district. After a master's degree from Cornell and a doctorate from the State University of New York at Albany, she was a bureau chief in the New York State Education Department and then deputy director of a state agency in the governor's office.

Moving to Washington, she became general director of the American Association of University Women. At McDaniel College, she taught education, counseling and psychology courses. She twice served as dean, first as associate for academic affairs and then of the graduate school. She was honored by inclusion in an edition of Who's Who of American Women.

She served as president of the Woman's Club of Westminster. The General Federation of Woman's Clubs honored her as Maryland Club Woman of the Year. She enjoyed the Westminster Torch Club and served as its president. She was also a civilian adviser on education to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. She was a member of Westminster United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed knitting, playing bridge, traveling and cuddling her succession of miniature poodles.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are stepsons Christian Wolfe, of Houston; Hawley Wolfe, of Baton Rouge, La.; Lewis Wolfe, of Kempner, Texas; and David Wolfe, of Port of Spain, Trinidad-Tobago; grandchildren Hannah, Sarah, Leah, Nathaniel, Charlotte, Noah, Grace, Eva, Priscilla, Naomi, Regina, Mathew and Rachel; and "adoptive daughters" Sarah Wolfe and Susan Leahy.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Baker Memorial Chapel on the campus of McDaniel College in Westminster. Officiating will be the Rev. David Highfield. Inurnment will be held in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, N.Y., at a later date.
