Helen Brunk Thomas, 86, of Fairhaven, Sykesville, formerly of Westminster, went to her eternal reward on Monday, January 30, 2017. Born February 13, 1930 in Baltimore she was the daughter of the late Dwight F. and Mary Naomi Wehrenberg Brunk. Helen was a graduate of the Union Memorial School of Nursing Class of 1950 where she graduated as a Registered Nurse. She worked at Carroll County Hospital, now Carroll Hospital Center, for much of her career. While at Carroll County Hospital she had a positive impact on the lives of many patients and fellow nurses and helped create and taught the Diabetic Education Program. After her retirement she volunteered as a nurse volunteer Angel at Carroll County Hospital. For many years, Helen was a member of the Westminster Riding Club, Westminster Garden Club, and sang in the Carroll County Choral Society. She and her husband, Lloyd, enjoyed traveling the world and especially enjoyed vacationing in the Cayman Islands and visiting their waterfront home on Hunting Creek in Preston, MD. Helen was a very creative person who loved to crochet, knit, sew, create art, and she was especially known for her talent in arranging flowers. But most of all, she loved her extended family, who benefited from her loving heart and passion for loving and serving God. Surviving are her children Judith Fortin and husband William of Westminster, John Christopher Buckingham and wife Janet of San Antonio, TX, Susan Ashley Vogel and husband Richard of Kennett Square, PA, and James Thomas of Taneytown; son-in-law Dale Smith of Big Pine Key, FL; sister Carolyn Eichler and husband John of Hampstead; and brother Richard Brunk and wife Theresa of Norfolk, VA; grandchildren William John Fortin IV, Rogina Curry, Carrie Fortin Torres, Angela Faust, Kyle and Megan Smith, Liz Vogel Peabody, Sarah Graham, Todd Buckingham, Natalie Jackson, and Paul Thomas and his mother Vickii Engel Thomas; great-grandchildren Julian Curry, Adalyn Faust, Reid and Audrey Buckingham and Emily Peabody. Twice married she was predeceased by her first husband, Donald L. Buckingham, and her second husband, Lloyd B. Thomas. She was also predeceased by brother Dwight Brunk, Jr, sister Nancy McElhattan, daughter Donna Smith and granddaughter Emily Vogel. A memorial service will be held on Saturday February 4, 2017 at 2 pm at the Chapel at Fairhaven, 7200 Third Ave., Sykesville with the Rev. Wayne Larson and the Rev. Dr. Ron Fisher officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church, 23 N. Court St., Westminster, MD 21157 or to Fairhaven Bishop's Chapel, 7200 Third Ave., Sykesville, MD 21784.
