Helen F. Gillis, 77, of Sykesville, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Seasons Hospice at Northwest Hospital.

Born July 29, 1935, in Annapolis, she was the daughter of the late John Charles and Emma Rozena Johnson Ferguson. She was the wife of Corlys Lee Gillis, who died in 1980.

She had lived in Silver Spring for more than 30 years. She moved to Sykesville in 2009. She had been a homemaker for most of her life. She enjoyed gardening, bike riding and swimming, and liked butterflies, pug dogs and African violets.

She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses and best known as a full-time Bible teacher. She was active in the ministry even through her illness and to the end of her life.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law Connie and Eric Cruz, of Florida, and Cathy and Chuck Bowman, of Carroll County; sons and daughters-in-law Curtis Gillis, of Rockville, Colin and Denise Gillis, of Virginia, Clinten and Loralee Gillis, of West Virginia, and Clayten and Jen Gillis, of Ellicott City; grandchildren Ryan and wife Deanna Bowman, Micayla and Tyler Bowman, and Carsen, Colten and Calvin Gillis.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Private interment will be in Park Lawn Cemetery in Rockville.
