Helen I. "Irene" Gassaway, 78, of Sykesville, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born Aug. 9, 1935, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Matilda and James Jefferson Sr. She was the wife of Robert Gassaway Jr., her husband of 53 years.

She was a member of White Rock United Methodist Church in Sykesville. She was an active church member and member of the United Methodist Women of White Rock. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining.

Surviving are sons James Robert Gassaway and wife JoAnn, of Sykesville, and Michael Robert Gassaway, of Baltimore; granddaughters Tawnya Jones and husband Tyrone, of Halethorpe, and Jasmine Turner, of Sykesville; brothers and sisters-in-law James Jr. and Shirley Jefferson, of Frederick, Charles and Leona Jefferson, of Westminster, and Robert Jefferson, of Frederick; a sister-in-law, Thelma Jefferson, of Frederick; nieces Cynthia Dorsey, Rachael Jefferson and Tanya Lyles; and a nephew, Dante Jefferson.

She was predeceased by brothers John and Richard Jefferson; and an uncle, Raymond Jefferson.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at White Rock United Methodist Church, 6300 White Rock Road, Sykesville. Interment will follow immediately in the church cemetery.
