Helen Jackson Tate, 85, of Ashton, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at home from aortic stenosis.

Born June 3, 1927, in Greensboro, N.C., she resided most of her life in Ashton. She was the wife of Raymond T. Tate, her husband of 67 years. 

She was active in her community and took a leadership role in many organizations, including The Ashton United Methodist Church, Montgomery General Hospital, MGH thrift shop, Sandy Spring Museum, Sandy Spring Neighbors Club, Montgomery County Homemakers, Solomon's Island Museum, the Wednesday Club and the 446th Bomb Group. She was a Girl Scout leader and a high school band mom, and she enjoyed meeting different kinds of dogs. She helped support many community and veteran organizations.

She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the world, and she enjoyed sharing her adventures with others. She was known for her smile.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are children Susan T. Burrowbridge and husband Don, of Tampa, Fla., son Stephen E. Tate and wife Jacki, of Mount Airy, Andrew P. Tate, of Yankeetown, Fla., and Elizabeth T. Winters and fiancee Wayne Kitzmiller, of Mount Airy; grandchildren Erin Leonard and husband Chris, Stacy Bullock, Kevin Burrowbridge, Alex Harden and husband Dan, Dana Tate and Margaret Winters; and seven great-grand children.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 8 East Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ashton United Methodist Church, 17314 New Hampshire Avenue, Ashton. A burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Mount Airy.
