Helen Mary Snyder, 95, of Bridgeport, WV, passed away on Thanksgiving, November 26, 2015 at her home in the Maplewood Retirement Community in Bridgeport, WV. She was born September 25, 1920 in Lambert, Montana, a daughter of the late Arthur C. and Hazel Winchell Gilbert. She was married to the late Roland C. Snyder, Sr. for 68 years, living in Westminster, MD for most of that time. She had lived in Bridgeport, WV, since 2005. She is survived by three sons, Roland Snyder, Jr. and his wife Patti, of Lake Jackson, TX; Robert Snyder and his wife Pamela of Salem, WV; James Snyder and his wife Wanda of Hanover, PA; one daughter Christine MacKenzie and her husband Scott of Albright, WV; many grandchildren and great- grandchildren; and a nephew, H. Lee Spencer of Osceola Mills, PA. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and Charles Gilbert. Helen grew up on a dairy farm near Plummer, MN and graduated from the Plummer High School in 1938. She had fond memories of sleigh rides in the winter and driving a four horse hitch plowing the fields. She moved to Carroll County, MD in 1940 with her parents and while working at the Charles Carroll Hotel, met her future husband. Helen and Corporal Snyder were married in December 1942 at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster, MD where she remained a member for over 60 years. Helen then spent the war years working as a machinist in Baltimore, MD. Besides raising four children, Helen had a variety of occupations including the first Welcome Wagon representative in Westminster, owner of Look About Campground, working in the office at Western Maryland Stockyards, cafeteria manager at Westminster Elementary School, and licensed real estate agent. Helen was a Baltimore Orioles fan for 60 years and loved to camp and travel. If she wasn't watching her "Birds", you could be sure she would have a book in her hands. Not one to let grass grow under her feet, she learned to swim at age 60 and took up golf at age 65; but now the journey that started on a homestead on the prairie in Montana has come to an end.
