Herbert Harry Hochhalter, 87, passed away April 27, 2016 at his home in Westminster, Maryland following a heart attack. Known as "Hap," Herb was valedictorian of his high school class in Streeter, North Dakota. He was also captain of the basketball team and sang on radio with a gospel quartet. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 - 48 and in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 - 54, where he was stationed in Okinawa as a fighter pilot, flying the F-86 Sabrejet and achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. In 1955 he became a technical writer with the Glenn L. Martin Company, forerunner of Martin Marietta. In January 1956 he took a position at the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. There he earned a master's degree in Electronic Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and worked as a radar design engineer until retirement. He is survived by his sisters Viola Emma Roth and Erma Lorraine Hattel; his son Gregory Hochhalter and wife Elizabeth; his daughter Dawn Dicker and husband Ron; and grandchildren Andrew Hochhalter and wife Malinda, Benjamin Hochhalter and wife Tracy, and Alexandra Hochhalter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Knowles Hochhalter, and three siblings: Ruth Laverna Wilson, Adolph Arthur Hochhalter and Edna Agnes Bruschwein. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 4th at 1:00 p.m. at the Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the start of the service. Interment with military honors will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Garrison Forest, Owings Mills.
