Herman Jesse Manahan, 97, of Sykesville, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Senior Constant Care in Sykesville.

Born Aug. 27, 1916, in Marston, he was the son of the late Clarence Levi Manahan and the late Viola Bond Manahan. He was the husband of the late Madeline V. Shipley Manahan, who died in 2008.

He served in the Army, stationed at Camp Waters in Texas. Early in his life he was a carpenter and builder. Later he owned and operated Manahan Insurance and Real Estate.

After retirement he enjoyed making wood craft projects for craft shows and flea markets. He was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan, and a champion checkers player in his youth. He was still playing checkers, and winning most of the time, up until two weeks before his death.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law Faye and Wayne Ruch, of Sykesville, Doris Lee and George Rohrbough, of Alexandria, Pennsylvania, Norma Jean and Ed Wentz, Anna Mae and Larry Bowman, all of Hanover, Pennsylvania, Rose Marie and John Hain, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; a sister, Bernetta Arrington, of Taneytown; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by brothers Griffith, Lavere and Wolford Manahan; and a son, Charles "Chuck" Manahan, who died in February 1993.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Arthur Monroe officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park in Finksburg.
