Horace Virgil Porter Jr., 74, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Winchester Medical Center.

Born October 11, 1939, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Horace Virgil Sr. and Edythe Delores Mercuri Porter. He was the husband of Patricia Ann Walther Porter, his wife of 51 years.

He was a Christian. He graduated from Milford Mill High School in Baltimore and served with the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He had worked as a meat cutter with A&P Grocery Stores and then retired, after 40 years, as co-owner and operator of the Food Rite Groceteria in Mount Airy.

He was a member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics Council #117 in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Deer Cinch Rod & Gun Club in Crappo, the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union in Baltimore, West Virginia Farm Association, the Morgan County Farm Bureau and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, target shooting, land stewardship and landscaping his farm.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children Tracey Ann Distler and husband Tim, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Todd Anthony Porter and wife Kim, of Owings Mills, and Robert Allen Karp and wife Pam, of Fredericksburg, Va.; a sister, Gloria Lee Odend'hal, of Manassas, Va.; grandchildren Samantha Taylor Heinlein and Hunter Reece Heinlein, both of Cincinnati, Ashley Nicole Porter, of Owings Mills, and Robert Allen Karp Jr. and Matthew Hunter Karp, both of Fredericksburg, Va.; step-grandchildren Ryan David Distler, Brittany Nicole Distler and Caitlynn Marie Distler, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; a step-great-grandchild, Addison Pearl Distler, of Cincinnati, Ohio; a close friend, Gordon Winfield Tyler and wife Laurie, of New Freedom, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va., where there will be a Junior Order Memorial service at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Fr. Leonard A. Smith officiating. Interment with graveside military honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown.
