Irene B. Johnson, age 78, of Westminster, MD, passed away Friday, September 11, 2015, at her home. Born May 1, 1937, in Baltimore, MD she was the daughter of the late Moses Barnes and Carrie Hoff Barnes. Irene was a graduate of Westminster High School, Class of 1955. She then worked as an LPN at Springfield Hospital for several years. In 1965, she became a school bus contractor and has owned and operated Johnson Bus Service, LLC until her passing. She was active in both the Carroll County School Bus Contractors Association and the Maryland School Bus Contractors Association. Irene had been active in the community for many years, volunteering with the Gamber Playground Association, the Providence Cemetery Association, serving as an election judge, member of The League of Women Voters and with the Republican Party in Carroll County. She had also been involved with farming throughout her life. Irene was a life-long member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Gamber. She is survived by children and their spouses: Jo Ann Elizabeth and Michael Wright of Lorton, VA, Lois Annette Johnson Medicus and companion Michael Miller of Westminser, Carol Johnson Garcia of Westminster and Thomas Hartley, Jr. and Denise Johnson of Mt. Airy; sister and brother-in-law; Ellen and Robert Muller, Sr. of Thurmont, and former spouse, Thomas H. Johnson, Sr. of Martinsburg, WV. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 AM at Calvary United Methodist Church, 3939 Gamber Road, Finksburg, MD. Interment will follow in Providence Cemetery, Gamber. The family will also receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
